I am a recent graduate and ran cross country and outdoor track for four years.
In 2002, I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Before my diagnosis, I was an avid athlete and was determined to not let my diabetes interfere with my performance. I continued to play a variety of sports, including softball, lacrosse, swim, tennis, and eventually xc and track.
I manage my diabetes by wearing an insulin pump and checking my blood sugar with a meter and lancet approximately 12 times per day. I am very conscious about my diet and focus on eating whole and healthy foods. My diet is 90% gluten free which has helped me maintain steady blood sugar levels.
I enjoy long distance running and hope to race more half marathons and eventually the full 26.2! I believe that, with proper preparation, I can accomplish anything non-diabetics can. I do not use my diabetes as an excuse for a poor performance, but strive to manage it the best I can in order to ensure success on race day.
My personal bests include….
800 meters (outdoor): 2:32
1600 meters (outdoor): 5:18
3200 meters (outdoor): 11:15
5k: 18:41
Half Marathon: 1:34:05
